Mudirappuzha Basin Hydro Electric Projects

Mudirapuzha River houses the lagest number of Power Stations Beginning with Maduppetty SHEP and upto Neriamangalam .
PALLIVASAL HYDRO ELECTRIC PROJECT
Pallivasal is the first hydro electric power station in Kerala. The project was completed in two stages. In the first stage, just a run-off river scheme was initially introduced with three units having capacity of 4.5 MW each. The first unit of the Pallivasal power station was commissioned on 19.03.1940. The second unit on 2-2-1941 and the third unit on 19-2-1942. The inaguration of Pallivasal power house was done by the then Diwan of Travancore Govt Sri C.P Ramaswami Iyer on 19-3-1940. The diverting wier constructed across Mudirapuzha river at Munnar called 'Ramaswamy Iyer Head Works', was inaguarted in 1944. The units 4.5 MW included in the first satge were up-rated to 5 MW in the fifties by changing the water wheels. The first stage of the project was completed with three units of 5 MW capacity. The second stage of development saw addition of three machines of 7.5 MW capacity in the station and construction of two dams for storage of water.Sethuparvathipuram dam at Kundala and Madupetty dam together contributed about 65 MCM of storage.

MADUPETTY POWER STATION
This is the power house situated at the highest level in Kerala at 1556 m above MSL and constructed in 1997-98 as Dam toe power house of Maduppatty Reservoir . The 2 MW generator generates at 11 kV and is connected to the 11 kV feeder. The station uses horizontal shaft francis turbine. The 275 rpm turbine and 750 rpm generator are coupled through a speed increasing gear box. The dicharged water from this power station is heading towards Ramaswamy Iyer headworks for further power production at Pallivasal Powerhouse. The annual Generation Capability of Maduppaty Power house is 6.40 MU

SENGULAM POWER STATION

The Sengulam Project was mainly intended to utilise the tailrace water from Pallivasal project. The project was commissioned in 1954 with an installed capacity of 48 MW (4 x 12 MW). Sengulam balancing reservoir was formed by constructing a dam at Sengulam. This reseroir has a storage capacity of 1.61 MCM. The water level of sengulam balancing reservoir is 10m higher than the tailrace water level of Pallivasal Powerhouse. Hence a pumping system is provided at Pallivasal powerhouse to pump the tailwater to Sengulam balancing reservoir. The waterlevel in the Sengulam balancing reservoir is kept within limits to avoid spill. The catchment area of the reservoir is approximately 5.18 sqkm. The tailrace discharge joins Mudirapuzha river and is flowing downstream to kallarkutty reservoir.
